After a couple of emotionally draining days thanks to Immigration Nation, I needed something to “cleanse” my soul. And what could be better than a romantic drama about a pop star that has lost her way and is trying to find herself with the cop that saved her from a suicide attempt by her side? Well, now that I think about it, this could’ve massively backfired, but thankfully, Beyond the Lights was everything I wanted. And more.

Nate Parker does a pretty decent job as one of the co-stars of the movie, but Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is the star that really shines, just as her character. With her performance, she manages to perfectly transmit how Nomi is actually feeling and the hidden struggles behind the persona she puts out in public. I also think the writing for her character is remarkable, making you emotionally connected from the get-go, keeping you invested in her development along her journey and always rooting for her.

In my opinion, it is a great movie all around and I really, really liked it. Definitely watching it if you have the chance.

Surprsingly, the Popcorn Time link isn’t working; but I did find it on Kanopy, where you can watch it for free, but it requires a US Public Library card and PIN. If you don’t have one or are not sure how to get one, you can rent it on almost every platform, including Amazon.
